Description
When Sara goes to the castle of Calatrava La Nueva, in Aldea del Rey, Ciudad Real, to give her professional opinion as a medical examiner on a discovery made during excavations, she has no idea what she is going to find. Her university friend, Javier, a renowned archaeologist, and his team, have stumbled upon the remains of a recently murdered man in a cemetery in the fortress. She soon realizes that they are not giving her all the information about the corpse, and threatens to leave.
For her to understand the importance of the discovery, Javier explains to her that the body has been found thanks to some 13th century documents found in Toledo, which describe the burial site. To Sara’s astonishment, the archaeologist lends her the translation of the document, in which Alonso, a young man living in Calatrava La Vieja, details the events that marked his life, not only with the Order of Calatrava, but also with the Order of the Temple.
The narrative is sprinkled with passages that defy rationality, but the facts and real characters of the time described in it lend such credibility to the narrative that Sara has no choice but to faithfully trust what she is reading, and joins the team in their investigation.
Encouraged by the magnitude of the discovery, which goes beyond the merely archaeological, they decide to make it public, which provokes a flood of news, criticism and opinion around the world. Moreover, if their assumptions are proven to be true, they could cause not only a scientific earthquake, but a theological one, a movement that could shake the very foundations of faith.
